Dawn Fraser is one of the greatest Australian athletes in our country’s history. Dawn Fraser won 4 gold medals in her Olympic career, and 8 Olympic medals in total. She also won six gold medals in the commonwealth games, and held 6,700 records. She took the 100 metre freestyle record for 15 years. (1 December 1956 to 8 January 1972.) In 1964, Dawn was named Australian of the Year, and gained membership of the Order of the British Empire in 1967. In 1988, she was voted Australia’s best female athlete in history. In the 1960’s she married Gary Ware, but the marriage didn’t last. Now Dawn has one daughter and a grandson.
